A NEW GOLF COURSE FOR GEORGETOWN, GUYANA

1.0 The Project
Working in collaboration with a reputable golf course developer, Cerulean Inc. proposes to secure an adequate parcel of land in the Ogle area containing natural elevations and partially forested areas, with natural properties to install effective water conservation systems. A phased approach to development will result in the construction of a modern eighteen-hole golf course, a clubhouse, maintenance building areas, recreational homes, parking, and safe pedestrian traffic circulation.

1.1 About Golf
Golf is a club-and-ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible . Different from the majority of ball games, golf does not require a measured playing area, with each individual course specially designed to cope with the mixed terrains and existing vegetation. The game at the common level is played on a course of eighteen holes, though smaller courses are designed with nine holes.

1.2 Rationale for a new golf course
As the City of Georgetown continues to develop and expand, there is a growing need for its residents to find new open spaces for recreation. As Guyana welcomes new residents to work in its new oil and gas industry, many of whom already play golf, the availability of a modern golf facility offering golf-related activities, would be a welcome facility and could contribute to their quick settlement in Guyana. For the leaders of the local business community, a new golf facility will improve their communication while creating new opportunities for relationships. Bruce Miller of Golf Travel says - “A round of golf has the ability to build lasting relationships in a few short hours, promote executives, fund projects, build teams, break down barriers, and create an environment of deal-making, stress relief, and wellness.”It's the one place where we willingly shut off our phones, turn away from distraction and become one with nature and ourselves.”

1.3 Who can play?
Because the game of golf does not require peak physical conditioning, persons from all age groups, gender and ethnic backgrounds can play and learn to play. Younger persons of pre-teen ages will especially be encouraged to play through youth golf development programs. Persons who enjoy greater allocations of time such as retired persons and returning nationals will also be targeted to become active in the sport.

1.4 How will the golf course be built?
Taking a strictly project management approach, and working in collaboration with a reputable golf course developer, Cerulean Inc proposes four phases to its completion over a period of three years. A project team comprising core experts and local construction industry experts will be appointed to ensure standards and quality are maintained. The project time will be especially mindful to establish contingency plans to manage the safe removal of endangered species found during the period of development.

1.5 How Much Land Is Needed?
To effectively accommodate a modern eighteen-hole golf course, a clubhouse, maintenance building areas, recreational homes along the perimeter of the course, parking, and safe pedestrian traffic circulation, a total of 200 acres will be needed. The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America surveyed more than 16,000 golf courses and learned the average course covers 150 acres. Approximately 100 acres of the average course is maintained turf grass. The turf grass on a golf course serves as a filter for runoff to control flooding, it filters dust and pollen and the open green space provides a cooling effect for the surrounding property. The remaining 50 acres of a golf course are devoted to forests, woodlands, wetlands and water bodies. Prime habitat for an abundance of wildlife.

2.0 Benefit of Golf to the Community
In Guyana the social and health impact, economic and environmental benefits of golf will contribute to the growth potential for the country as a whole.

2.1 Social and health benefits
Golf creates an environment where persons can conduct business and spend quality time with loved ones and friends. Whilst playing golf persons engage each other in sharing their personal and professional experiences that leads to developing relationships. As the Ministry of Business and Tourism continues to promote Guyana as a place to do business, the operation of a modern golf course will allow golfers to become more socially adaptable. As it relates to personal health, a person who walks an 18-hole golf course will definitely benefit from better health and a long term healthier lifestyle. Walking a golf course also bring additional benefits such as lowering the risk of diabetes, reducing stress, preventing heart disease, and a decreasing need for medication. Guyanese nationals who live in the diaspora will see this as an incentive to relocate home and engage their spare time in the social and health benefits of a golf course.

2.2 Environmental Benefits
By their sheer large size and open spaces, golf courses compliment efforts to create balance in sustainability of the environment. The grass on a golf course serves as a filter to control running water that reduces the risk of flooding, it attracts wild life such as rare birds, and the open green space can accommodate open air entertainment, and can generate a cooling effect for the surrounding property.

2.3 Economic benefits
Based on its designed, and the facilities contained therein, a new golf course in Guyana will create its own value by having a positive impact on the country through jobs, taxes, charitable fundraising, hospitality/tourism and more. As a subgroup of the Guyana’s tourism sector, a revamped golf industry could create much needed employment in areas such as consulting, management, construction, engineering, landscaping and water conservation just to name a few. The building of a new course and surrounding building could potentially provide the equivalent of one year’s full employment for more than 300 people, and facility operations was worth additional full-time jobs each year. A golf course can also positively impact a community by its property values on or near the golf course. Proximity to open spaces and parks are seen as important considerations when making home-buying decisions.

New Horse Racing Track

Call for Investors: The sport of horse racing in Guyana is in need of urgent reform. A racecourse is a critical element for horse racing to take place. The absence of a racecourse in the capital city of Georgetown, denies its residents the enjoyment of the spectacle of horse racing. The economic impact of a racecourse in Georgetown could provide jobs and boost Guyana’s tourism product.
